Question Question regarding Surma / Kohl

As we know it is a Sunnah to wear Surma in the eyes.

    1. Is there a specific day when we apply it or can it be every night?

    2. I see alot of women go outside wearing surma, some without niqaab and others even wear surma with niqaab. Is this allowed? If it IS allowed then why - please explain?

    3. The surma I use is imported from Pakistan. What type of surma did our Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] use? Someone told me it is a different type of Surma and it has a special name? Also where can you get hold of it as I want to buy it?

Fight them, and Allah will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame, help you (to victory) over them, and heal the breasts of the Believers (At-Tawba 14)

Re: Question regarding Surma / Kohl

    3. The surma our Nabi used was Ithmid Surma [reddish-brown colour] and has bigger granules. I had once recieved this surma off a relative who got it from Makkah. At the time I didn't know what surma it was. I used it once and the granules felt different in my eyes so I stopped using it.

I've not seen it in the UK and not found it on any online stores.

Btw some people have told me that women are not supposed to wear kohl / surma when they leave the house and if they have any surma in their eyes they have to wash it off - as it attracts attention from men and makes the eyes appear beautiful. Obviously women are not supposed to wear make-up when leaving the house so eyeliner, eyeshadow and glitter etc would not be allowed.

Would the same principle apply to surma [mainly black kohl] and what about the other types e.g. Ithmid?

Please give an answer related to the Hanafi madhab and the other madhab's

    سلام عليكم

Sorry, this is a bit late, but Ithmid in English is: Antimony. And they sell two types in places like Makkah--one is black and referred to as the cool one (i.e. it doesn't burn when you put it on your eyes) whereas the other one is reddish brown and referred to as hot (burns a little when you put it in your eyes). As for girls wearing it outside the house, this is fine if their eyes are covered; otherwise, she should wash it out. The best stuff comes from Iran (Isfahan).

    سلام عليكم
